Anxiety is an unpleasant state of inner struggle, often accompanied by nervous behavior such as uncontrollable physical motions, or certain unpleasant body manifestations (like itchiness or even pain). It is like a fixation on an unpleasant feeling of dread over something unlikely to happen, but that seems quite probable to you. It expresses through worries, feelings of fear, and a general sense of uneasiness.
Anxiety is not the same as fear, though. Where fear is felt over something dangerous and realistically menacing, anxiety doesn’t respond to a real threat. Anxiety is an overreaction over a situation that seems menacing, but really isn’t.
Anxiety manifests to you through fatigue, concentration problems, a constant sense of restlessness that can generate sleeping disorders, and even muscular tension. All of these problems in the long run lead to physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, and even sexual instabilities.
Stress is the body’s reaction to a challenge or stressor that comes from your environment. Generally this activates the fight-or-flight response. Adrenaline (sometimes called the “fight or flight” hormone) increases when you are angry or stressed. Stressful situations can affect your mental and physical well-being. High levels of adrenaline and similar stress hormones raise your blood pressure and cholesterol, both of which are risk factors for heart disease. Stress hormones can even damage your heart directly and make you more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors like smoking or overeating.
What is the difference between Stress and Anxiety?
Stress is the positive or negative response of certain situations in your environment. Anxiety is the continuation of that response in a distorted way, and persists in absence of any stimulus.
What is the difference between anxiety and phobia?
Anxiety is more generic, whereas phobia is more specific and is directed to an object, an animal, or specific things like spaces or places.
I treat anxiety and stress with a variety of techniques that would help you relax and then contemplate your different thoughts and emotions. This contemplation without judgment would lead into dialogues of communication and resolutions. This will take place through a process that includes several steps or periods. During that process you will learn to understand and relate to your own internal thoughts and feelings; to comprehend better your own response code system as a reaction to a given situation; to improve your discernment capability (by learning to choose what is more convenient to you); and finally to achieve the true purpose of your life.*
